India's Sensitive Index climbed 1.5%, to 15970.75, but other markets ended lower in thin trading volumes. China's Shanghai Composite dropped 0.7% to 2190.11. The index has fallen more than 22% so far this year, including a loss in excess of 6% just this month, in response to fear the euro zone's debt troubles and a monetary policy that is still restrictive would affect the nation's output.
Elsewhere, South Korea's Kospi shed 0.6% to 1856.70 and Taiwan's Taiex gave up 0.3% to 7092.58.
Stock markets in Hong Kong, Australia and Singapore were among those closed for holidays.
