Shipping Stocks to Watch on April 12, 2012

The BDI data is critical for all the  DryBulk Shipping stocks. The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) is a number issued daily by the London-based Baltic Exchange. Not restricted to Baltic Sea countries, the index tracks worldwide international shipping prices of various dry bulk cargoes.The BDI is one of the purest leading indicators of economic activity. It measures the demand to move raw materials and precursors to production, as well as the supply of ships available to move this cargo. Consumer spending and other economic indicators are backward looking, meaning they examine what has already occurred. The BDI offers a real time glimpse at global raw material and infrastructure demand. Unlike stock and commodities markets, the Baltic Dry Index is totally devoid of speculative players. Shippers are seeing strong upside in today's trade, as reports suggest many carriers are dropping anchor until rates increase further and Alcoa's earnings surprise may indicate a more accelerated global shipping recovery. Alpha Natural Resources Inc. (NYSE:ANR) is currently trading at $14.9797 up 2.4% in after-hours on 22990 shares traded. ANR is trading -18.88% below its 50 day moving average and -42.70% below its 200 day moving average. ANR is -75.29% below its 52-week high and 6.01% above its 52-week low.

Power amplifier vendor RF Micro Devices (RFMD -2.9%) is among the casualties of Nokia's (NOK) Q1 warning, and so might (to a lesser extent) Lumia chip supplier Qualcomm (QCOM unchanged) Less affected is baseband/power management chip supplier (TXN +0.9%): though its March guidance cut was almost certainly Nokia-influenced, the fact TI is winding down its baseband ops limits the impact of Nokia's woes.

Avid Technology (AVID) has resumed trading following its Q1 warning, and is currently down 18.2% AH. With Avid specifically blaming weakness in "creative enthusiast" solutions, questions about further market share losses at the hands of cheaper products such as Adobe's (ADBE) Premiere Pro and Apple's (AAPL) Final Cut Pro are bound to be raised.

Richardson Electronics (RELL): FQ3 EPS of $0.09 misses by $0.01. Revenue of $38.3M (-3.5% Y/Y) misses by $3M. Shares -0.4% AH.
