Stock Alerts -Apple suppliers (QCOM -1.6%. BRCM -2.3%. SWKS -2.9%. AVGO -1%. TQNT -3.4%) aren't responding well to the tech giant's FQ1 report -1/27/14

Apple suppliers, Nasdaq futures sell off AH
  • Apple suppliers aren't responding well to the tech giant's FQ1 report. Though Apple beat estimates on the back of higher iPhone ASPs (the result of a mix shift towards the 5S), iPhone units (51M) fell short of Street expectations (56M-57M), and the company's FQ2 revenue guidance is below consensus.
  • Unsurprisingly Cirrus Logic (CRUS) is the biggest decliner: its shares are down 6.7% AH. Other decliners: QCOM -1.6%. BRCM -2.3%. SWKS -2.9%. AVGO -1%. TQNT -3.4%.
  • Cirrus, believed to get over 70% of its sales from Apple, reports tomorrow. Qualcomm reports on Wednesday, and Broadcom on Thursday.
  • Nasdaq-100 (QQQ) futures are down 0.8% in response to Apple's numbers.

Oracle's license, hardware product growth in-line; shares +0.7% AH
  • Oracle's (ORCL) software license/cloud subscription sales (drives future services revenue) fell 1% Y/Y in FQ2 to $2.4B. That represents a reversal from FQ1's 4% growth, but is in-line with guidance of -6% to +4%. Hardware product sales fell 3% Y/Y to $714M, an improvement from FQ1's 14% drop and near the high end of a guidance range of -11% to -1%.
  • License update/product support services revenue (49% of total revenue, tends to be fairly stable) rose 6% Y/Y vs. 7% in FQ1. Hardware support sales rose 4%.
  • $2.8B was spent on buybacks, down slightly from FQ1's $3B but still doing much to strengthen EPS. Opex rose 4% Y/Y, even with FQ1. Sales/marketing spend +11% to $2B, R&D +6% to $1.3B.
  • Americas revenue (54% of total) +4% Y/Y, even with FQ1. EMEA +4%, up from FQ1's +2%. Asia-Pac remains weak, sales -9% vs. -4%. Cisco and others have reported seeing NSA-related challenges in China.
  • Larry Ellison says cloud/SaaS software bookings rose 35% Y/Y. That suggests bookings for on-premise software declined meaningfully.
  • CC at 5PM ET, guidance should be provided. FQ2 results, PR.

Stock Alerts - 3D Systems (DDD +4.7%), Stratasys (SSYS +4.3%), Voxeljet (VJET -3.1%) -11/21/13

3D printing plays rally following bullish notes ... but not Voxeljet
  • After getting drubbed two days in a row, 3D Systems (DDD +4.7%), Stratasys (SSYS +4.3%), ExOne (XONE +2.5%), and Proto Labs (PRLB +3.3%) are all rebounding a bit. Industrial inspection/scanning tool vendor Perceptron (PRCP +7.9%), whose status as a 3D printing play has been hotly debated, is also joining in on the fun.
  • S&P has raised its PT for 3D Systems to $84 from $63, citing sales and margin growth. Meanwhile, Piper has issued a bullish note on Stratasys: The firm notes management was upbeat during a recent talk, and thinks MakerBot's 3D printer sales are better than expected.
  • Back in August, Kara Swisher reported MakerBot is expecting 2013 revenue of $75M+, up ~5x from a 2012 level of $15.7M.
  • Voxeljet (VJET -3.1%), which was hammered yesterday thanks in part to a bearish and colorful Citron Research report, is notably missing out on today's rally. Voxeljet's decline comes even though Citi has defended the company against Citron, stating only 3 of the 52 companies that have bought the German firm's printers have been provided loans.
  • Voxeljet is down 46% over the last three trading days, but still up 186% from its $13 October IPO price.

VMware (VMW): Q3 EPS of $0.84 beats by $0.02 -10/21/13

VMware beats by $0.02, revenues in-line

  • VMware (VMW): Q3 EPS of $0.84 beats by $0.02.
  • Revenue of $1.29B (+14% Y/Y) in-line.
VMware's Q3 license growth beats expectations; unearned revenue jumps

  • VMware's (VMW) Q3 license revenue (drives future services revenue) rose 15% Y/Y to $564M. That's well above Q2's 2.6% growth, and also guidance for 9%-13% growth. Services revenue +13% to $725M.
  • Total revenue growth was 14%, or 19% if excluding assets that were either sold or are part of the Pivotal spinoff. VMware's unearned revenue balance rose 21% Y/Y to $3.64B. That's one reason free cash flow rose 50% Y/Y to $543M, easily surpassing net income of $261M.
  • R&D spend only rose 2% Y/Y to $266M, thanks to restructuring moves. Sales/marketing +9% to $449M.
  • Guidance will be provided on the CC (starts at 5PM ET).
  • VMW +4% AH. EMC also +4%. EMC reports tomorrow morning.
  • Q3 results,

VMware Q4 revenue guidance light, but license guidance strong

  • VMware (VMW) guides on its Q3 CC for Q4 revenue of $1.45B-$1.48B, largely below a $1.48B consensus. However, license growth is expected to remain healthy, rising 12%-16% Y/Y after accelerating to 15% in Q3
  • In addition, VMware now expects 2013 operating cash flow of $2.3B-$2.5B vs. prior guidance of $2.1B-$2.35B.
  • The company does expect its Q1 2014 Q/Q revenue and license revenue drops to be 100 bps greater than the drop it saw in Q1 2013. However, full-year revenue is still expected to grow 15% Y/Y vs. a 14.5% consensus.
  • VMware also mentioned its bookings were strong in all three major geographies, including Asia-Pac, where peers have stumbled. Costly enterprise license agreements (ELAs) now account for 1/3 of total bookings, and over 40% of bookings involved something besides standalone vSphere licenses, up from 35% in Q2 and 30% a year ago.
  • End-user computing (PC virtualization, mobile software) bookings fell slightly Y/Y after rising at a mid-teens rate in Q2. That could be a sign Citrix's (CTXS) troubles are due to broader demand weakness.
  • VMW now +8.3% AH. IBM and Citrix had led investors to expect bad news. EMC +4.5%. JPMorgan's upgrade was well-timed.
  • Q3 results, details

Netflix (NFLX) shares jump after earnings, outlook Q3 EPS of $0.52 beats by $0.03. - 10/21/13

NetfliX beats by $0.03.

  • Netflix (NFLX): Q3 EPS of $0.52 beats by $0.03.
  • Revenue of $1.1B in-line. Shares +5.5% AH.
Netflix uninterested in sports, keeping "open mind" on movies

  • Though rumors have been afoot that the NFL will try to sell TV rights to Netflix (NFLX) or Google, content chief Ted Sarandos asserted on the Q3 CC Netflix is still uninterested in bidding for sports content.
  • On the other hand, the company is interested in documentaries, and is keeping an "open mind" on films, though the pay-TV window demanded by theaters makes things difficult.
  • Netflix expects another 6M U.S. streaming net adds in 2014 on top of the 6M it expects to see this year. The company sees a 400 bps improvement in its U.S. streaming contribution margin each year.
  • Reed Hastings insists there's "zero cord-cutting." Is he giving an honest take, or throwing a bone to MSOs the company is reportedly trying to strike set-top deals with?
  • Hastings also admitted in the shareholder letter "momentum-investor-fueled euphoria" has contributed to the huge 2013 rally delivered by his company's shares. "Some of the euphoria today feels like 2003."
  • Orange is the New Black is set to be Netflix's most-watched original show by year's end.
  • Shares +10.8% AH to new highs

More on Netflix: margin growth solid, content expenses to be recognized faster

  • Q3 U.S. streaming margin was 23.7%, up 120 bps Q/Q and 450 bps Y/Y, and the division had a contribution profit of $166M (+10% Q/Q and +47% Y/Y). Netflix (NFLX) is guiding for a Q4 margin of 23.2%.
  • The international unit had a $74M contribution loss in Q3 vs. $66M in Q2 and $92M a year ago, and a $65M loss is expected in Q4. But Q3 net adds totaled 1.44M, beating guidance of 550K-1.25M and raising the size of the international sub base to 9.19M. 900K-1.7M net adds are expected in Q4.
  • Reed Hastings admits "low quality" free trial promotions in Latin America boosted Q3 international adds, and will pressure Q4 adds a bit.
  • The DVD sub base fell by 360K Q/Q to 7.15M after declining by 470K in Q2. The business had a $107M contribution profit vs. $109M in Q2.
  • Going forward, Netflix will amortize original content costs more quickly, due to the fact a large portion of viewing happens shortly after a show launches. Until now, shows were amortized on a straight-line basis over four years or the show's license period (whichever is shorter).
  • Free cash flow was $7M in Q3 vs. $13M in Q2 and -$20M a year ago. Netflix expects Q4 EPS of $0.47-$0.73, above a $0.46 consensus.

EPA to set carbon limits on power plants
  • The Environmental Protection Agency is scheduled to today unveil restrictions on carbon emissions for new power plants, a key part of President Obama's policy to fight what many see as global warming.
  • The EPA will reportedly set CO2 limits at 1,100 pounds per megawatt hour for coal plants and 1,000 pounds for most natural gas plants. To meet those restrictions, coal plants would have to capture and store 20-40% of their CO2 emissions using technology that isn't yet being deployed on a commercial scale. The industry argues that the work would be so expensive that it would preclude the building of new plants.
  • More far-reaching limits for existing facilities are due to be proposed in June 2014.

Adobe Systems misses by $0.02, misses on revenues, Creative Cloud strength overshadows soft guidance -9/1/2013

Adobe Systems misses by $0.02, misses on revenues
  • Adobe Systems (ADBE): FQ3 EPS of $0.32 misses by $0.02.
  • Revenue of $995.1M misses by $14.9
Adobe +4.6% AH, Creative Cloud strength overshadows soft guidance
  • In addition to missing FQ3 estimates, Adobe (ADBE) is guiding for FQ4 revenue of $1B-$1.05B and EPS of $0.28-$0.34, below a consensus of $1.08B and $0.41.
  • However, the company also states it added 331K paid Creative Cloud subs in FQ3, easily more than FQ2's 221K and FQ1's 153K, and leading the total base to grow to 1.031M. Enterprise CC adoption was stronger than expected.
  • Creative annual recurring revenue (ARR) +53% Q/Q to $546M. Adobe expects to add "slightly more" CC subs in FQ4 than were added in FQ3, and is on track to top its FY13 Digital Media ARR target of $800M.
  • The shift to cloud subscriptions from up-front licenses has the effect of making Adobe's near-term revenue and earnings trail its bookings and free cash flow, as cloud revenue is recognized over the life of a subscription. Thus, thanks to the CC shift, Adobe's recognized Digital Media revenue fell 16% Y/Y to $636.7M.
  • Marketing Cloud (ad tech) had another strong quarter, growing 28% Y/Y (25% exc. Neolane) and reaching a $1B/year run rate. Total Digital Marketing revenue +18% to $311.7M.

More on Adobe: Buybacks, deferred revenue, hardware, Acrobat
  • Adobe (ADBE) spent $326M in FQ3 to repurchase ~7M shares (1.4% of outstanding shares).
  • Deferred revenue totaled $734M at the end of FQ3, +6% Q/Q and reversing FQ2's 1% drop.
  • Adobe declares "the overwhelming majority" of its customers are shifting from perpetual to term-based licenses, validating market acceptance of Creative Cloud.
  • Document Services revenue (a portion of Digital Media revenue) fell 1.5% Y/Y to $182.7M thanks to shift towards Acrobat subscriptions. Document Services ARR rose 30% Q/Q to $109M, with total subscribers topping 1.3M after crossing 1M in FQ2.
  • Print/publishing revenue was soft, falling 14% Y/Y to $46.7M (5% of revenue).
  • Adobe also announces Project Mighty (a Bluetooth-equipped tablet stylus) and Project Napoleon (a digital ruler/guide) will be released in 1H14
  • R&D spend +10% Y/Y to $208.7M, sales/marketing spend +5% to $388.7M. CC/Marketing Cloud investments have much to do with the R&D growth.
  • ADBE +5% AH
