Financial and exporter stocks lost ground as investors took a hard look at a decidedly bearish global growth outlook despite this week's encouraging manufacturing data in China and the U.S.
Japan's Nikkei Stock Average fell 0.6%, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 dropped 1.2%, South Korea's Kospi Composite was up 0.4% and New Zealand's NZX-50 lost 0.4%.
Dow Jones Industrial Average futures were down twelve points in screen trade.
The euro was at $1.2935 against the U.S. dollar, from $1.2946 late Wednesday in New York, and at ¥99.17 against the yen, from ¥99.38. The dollar was fetching ¥76.65, from ¥76.72.
Spot gold was at $1,613.10 a troy ounce, up 60 cents from its New York settlement on Wednesday. February Nymex crude oil futures were up five cents at $103.27 a barrel on Globex.
