The Shanghai Composite climbed 1.2% to 2199.42, ending a dismal year with its third consecutive daily gain. Japan's Nikkei Stock Average rose 0.7% to 8455.35, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index closed 0.2% higher at 18434.39.
Elsewhere, India's Sensex fell 0.6% to 15454.92, its fourth consecutive decline and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 index fell 0.4% to 4071.10 in a shortened trading session. South Korean markets were closed for a holiday.
But it was a dismal year for major Asian markets. In Mumbai, the Sensex plunged 25%, The Shanghai Composite ended down 22% after earlier this week closing at its lowest level since March 2009, and the Hang Seng skidded 20%. The Nikkei slumped 17%, as did Singapore's Straits Times Index. Australia's benchmark lost 15% and South Korea's Kospi lost 11% in 2011. A rare gainer was the Indonesian market, where the benchmark crept up 2.8% for 2011.
