Baltimore Ravens beat 49ers to win Super Bowl XLVII

NEW ORLEANS -- A power outage at the Super Bowl put the nation's biggest sporting event on hold for more than a half-hour Sunday, interrupting an otherwise electric, back-and-forth game that ended with Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens as NFL champions thanks to a 34-31 victory over the San Francisco 49ers.

Flacco, voted the MVP, threw three first-half touchdown passes to cap an 11-TD, zero-interception postseason. Jacoby Jones returned the second-half kickoff 108 yards, a Super Bowl record, to give Baltimore a 28-6 lead.

Moments later, lights lining the indoor arena faded, making it difficult to see. When action resumed, Colin Kaepernick and the 49ers scored 17 consecutive points, getting as close as 31-29.

But Baltimore stopped San Francisco on fourth-and-goal from the 5 with under 2 minutes left when Kaepernick's pass sailed beyond Michael Crabtree in the end zone.

The biggest deficit a team has ever overcome to win a Super Bowl is 10 points, and there were moments were it appeared San Francisco had a chance to better that mark. Instead, the 49ers lost for the first time in six trips to the Super Bowl.

The AFC champion Ravens (14-6), a franchise that moved from Cleveland to Baltimore 17 years ago, improved to 2-0 in the big game. They also won the championship in 2001, when linebacker Ray Lewis was voted the game's MVP. Lewis was not a major factor this time, but he was a center of attention, playing in the final game of his 17-year career before retiring.

The 49ers struggled early in the first Super Bowl coaching matchup between brothers: Baltimore's John Harbaugh is 15 months older than San Francisco's Jim Harbaugh.

Baltimore led 28-6 after Jones opened the second half with the longest kickoff return in a Super Bowl, his eyes glancing up at the videoboard, presumably to watch himself sprint to the end zone. The 49ers showed they were capable of a comeback in their previous game: They trailed by 17 against the Atlanta Falcons before winning the NFC championship game.

Shortly following Jones' return, the sudden, odd power outage arrived. Escalators weren't working. Officials stopped play about 1½ minutes into the third quarter, and the bizarre delay lasted 34 minutes in real time before action resumed. Some players sat. Others stretched. Some fans chanted, "Let's go, Ravens!" Others passed time by doing the wave.

This was the 10th time New Orleans hosted the big game -- tying Miami for most in a city -- and first since Hurricane Katrina devastated the Big Easy in August 2005.

Giants edge Patriots 21-17 to win Super Bowl XLVI

The New York Giants have done it again.

Eli Manning authored his second Super Bowl-winning drive against the New England Patriots in four years, leading the Giants to a 21-17 win in Super Bowl XLVI on Sunday.

Ahmad Bradshaw's 6-yard touchdown run with 57 seconds left in the fourth quarter capped a 9-play, 88-yard drive that gave the Giants the lead for good.

Manning passed for 296 yards and a touchdown to win his second title, one more than his older brother Peyton. And the victory came in the same city that Peyton has called home for his entire career.

Remembering September 11th

Ten years later

The events of September 11, 2001 changed the lives of so many people around the world. In the years since that day, thoughtful online efforts have provided an outlet for grief, for learning and a means for healing. Virtual spaces have helped us to remember the victims and honor the courage of those who risked their lives to save others.

On this 10th anniversary, we wanted to note a few of these virtual places:

9/11 Memorial
  • On Monday September 12, the 9/11 Memorial will open to the public within the original footprint of the twin towers. This web archive lets people place and share their photos and videos in geographical context, collectively piecing together the history that was witnessed, one photo or video at a time. Our relationship with the 9/11 Memorial team dates back to 2009, when we collaborated to build their Make History site.
  • The 9/11 Memorial has also produced a commemorative album called Ten Years On, a musical tribute featuring well-known musicians and performers. The album has inspired a video archive project on YouTube of the same name which encourages people to submit video tributes to those affected by the events of 9/11.
The New York Times
  • YouTube also worked with The New York Times on a YouTube Channel featuring archived news broadcasts and personal stories and reflections from the public.
Mountain Lakes (NJ) Volunteer Fire Department
  • John Reilly, a software executive and Deputy Chief of the Mountain Lakes (NJ) Volunteer Fire Department, built First-Responder to help community organizations like fire departments and EMS corps increase their emergency preparedness and respond more effectively to crises. This open source application uses freely available web tools to map critical resources and contingency plans, dispatch and track first responders, and interoperate with mutual aid organizations during emergencies.
It’s been an honor to see these tools being built using our platforms and products—and humbling to see them come to life.

Potential impact of Hurricane Irene

Potential impact of Hurricane Irene

Insurance
- Insurers have already lost tens of billions of dollars to disaster-related payouts this year, by some measures up to 20% more than they lost in 2009 and 2010 combined. Reports suggest that insurers have not been able to raise rates for three years amid strong competition and readily available supply, but industry analysts say even a small storm now would be enough to trigger premium hikes.

- State Farm is the largest provider of homeowners' insurance in the Carolinas. In the commercial space, AIG is the largest insurer in Georgia and South Carolina. State Farm, Travelers, Liberty Mutual and Nationwide are also said to have significant exposures in the states that could be most affected by the storm.

Energy
- The projected path of Irene has the storm passing by a handful of nuclear power stations located in coastal areas. From Progress Energy's Brunswick Station in Georgia to Seabrook Nuclear Generating Station in New Hampshire, no fewer than six plants located on or close to the Atlantic will be exposed to the storm. Dominion, Entergy, Exelon and NextEra also own or operate one or more of these plants. For a full map of US nuclear plants, see www.nrc.gov/info-finder/reactor/.

- Crude and gasoline prices are already being impacted by the storm, as some tanker deliveries to East Coast ports have been disrupted. Refineries owned by Conoco, Sunoco and Valero are under threat from the storm, which has the potential to briefly shut in some facilities. East Coast refineries make up about 7% of the US' refining capacity. Refineries on the East Coast are located in Virginia, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The eight east coast refineries include PBF Energy Partners' plant in Delaware City; Conoco's plants in Linden, NJ and Trainer, Penn; Hess' Port Reading plant; United Refining's Warren, Penn plant; Sunoco's plants in Marcus Hook and Philadelphia, Penn.

Retail
- It's back-to-school school season and struggling retailers are counting on a sales surge to buoy third quarter earnings. Irene will certainly dampen sales over a key weekend that comes near the peak of back-to-school shopping. Earlier this spring many retailers were hurt by uncharacteristically stormy weather in the mid west, while online retailers actually saw a surge in shopping activity. Negative impact could be felt among department stores and apparel names. Certain mall REITs could also feel some losses as well. Some retailers may actually see an uptick in sales, as homeowners stock up on supplies ahead of the event and purchase repair materials in the aftermath. Positive impact could be felt at Walmart, Costco, Home Depot and Lowes.

NYSE Closure?
- Weather conditions have been known to close the exchange: on Feb. 10, 1969, heavy snow closed the NYSE and led to a late open the next morning at 11 a.m. The NYSE also closed during New York City's blackout on July 14, 1977. A massive snowstorm delayed the open of trade in in January 1996. There have not been any weather-related closures since then.

Good luck to friends and family in the path of Hurricane Irene and have safe.

US loses AAA credit rating from S&P

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The lowering of America's sterling credit rating was the punctuation mark on a tumultuous week in financial markets.

Standard & Poor's, the credit rating agency, said Friday it was dissatisfied with the plan Congress came up with earlier in the week to reduce the country's debt.

This is the first time the nation's credit rating has fallen below the highest level, AAA. The U.S. had held that rating since 1917. The move came just days after a gridlocked Congress finally agreed to spending cuts that would reduce the debt by more than $2 trillion.

The drop in the rating by one notch to AA-plus was telegraphed as a possibility back in April. The three main credit agencies, which also include Moody's Investor Service and Fitch, had warned during the budget fight that if Congress did not cut spending far enough, the country faced a downgrade. Moody's said it was keeping its AAA rating on the nation's debt, but that it might still lower it.

One of the biggest questions after the downgrade was what impact it would have on already nervous investors. While the downgrade was not a surprise, some selling is expected when stock trading resumes Monday morning. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 699 points this week, the biggest weekly point drop since October 2008. The weak economy was the primary catalyst behind that plunge, but the debt debate and the threat of a downgrade were also factors.

"I think we will have a knee-jerk reaction on Monday," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank.
But any losses might be short-lived.
"The market's already been shaken out," said Harvey Neiman, a portfolio manager of the Neiman Large Cap Value Fund. "It knew it was coming."
One fear in the market has been that a downgrade would scare buyers away from U.S. debt. If that were to happen, the interest rate paid on U.S. bonds, notes and bills would have to rise to attract buyers. And that could lead to higher borrowing rates for consumers, since the rates on mortgages and other loans are pegged to the yield on Treasury securities.

However, even without an AAA rating from S&P, U.S. debt is seen as one of the safest investments in the world. And investors clearly weren't scared away this week. While stocks were plunging, investors were buying Treasurys and driving up their prices. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which falls when the price rises, fell to a low of 2.39 percent on Thursday from 2.75 percent Monday.

A study by JPMorgan Chase found that there has been a slight rise in rates when countries lost an AAA rating. In 1998, S&P lowered ratings for Belgium, Italy and Spain. A week later, their 10-year rates had barely moved.

The government fought the downgrade. Administration sources familiar with the discussions said the S&P analysis was fundamentally flawed. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss the matter publicly. S&P had sent the administration a draft document in the early afternoon Friday and the administration, after examining the numbers, challenged the analysis.
S&P said that in addition to the downgrade, it is issuing a negative outlook, meaning that there was a chance it will lower the rating further within the next two years. It said such a downgrade, to AA, would occur if the agency sees smaller reductions in spending than Congress and the administration have agreed to make, higher interest rates or new fiscal pressures during this period.

In its statement, S&P said that it had changed its view "of the difficulties of bridging the gulf between the political parties" over a credible deficit reduction plan.

S&P said it was now "pessimistic about the capacity of Congress and the administration to be able to leverage their agreement this week into a broader fiscal consolidation plan that stabilizes the government's debt dynamics anytime soon."

One analyst suggested the downgrade might move Congress to take concrete steps to fix the nation's budget problems.

"It's a downgrade and it's bad, but if it spurs more conversation about bringing down spending and maybe more intelligent tax policy, it could be a good thing in the long run," said Frank Barbera, a portfolio manager of the Sierra Core Retirement Fund.

The Federal Reserve and other U.S. regulators said in a joint statement that S&P's action should not have any impact on how banks and other financial institutions assess the riskiness of Treasurys or other securities guaranteed by the U.S. government. The statement was issued to make sure banks did not feel that the downgrade would affect the amount of capital that regulators require the banks to hold against possible losses.

Before leaving for a weekend at Camp David, President Barack Obama met with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner in the Oval Office late Friday afternoon.

The downgrade is likely to have little to no impact on how the United States finances its borrowing, through the sale of Treasury bonds, bills and notes. This week's buying proves that.

"Investors have voted and are saying the U.S. is going to pay them," said Mark Zandi, chief economist of Moody's Analytics. "U.S. Treasurys are still the gold standard." He noted that neither his parent organization, Moody's, nor Fitch, the other of the three major rating agencies, have downgraded U.S. debt.

The ratings agencies were sharply criticized after the financial crisis in 2008 for not warning investors about the risks of subprime mortgages. Those mortgages were packaged as securities and sold to investors who lost billions of dollars when the loans went bad.

Japan had its ratings cut a decade ago to AA, and it didn't have much lasting impact. The credit ratings of both Canada and Australia have also been downgraded over time, without much lasting damage.
"I don't think it's going to amount to a lot," said Peter Morici, a University of Maryland business economist.

Still, he said, "The United States deserves to have this happen," because of its clumsy handling of fiscal policy.

In reacting to the downgrade, Democrats and Republicans continued to blame each other and pledged to hold firm to their principles.

Republican presidential candidates criticized the White House. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., called on Obama to fire Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and submit a plan to balance the budget and not just reduce future deficits. Republican candidate Mitt Romney, former governor of Massachusetts, said the credit downgrade was the "latest casualty" in Obama's failed economic leadership.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said the American people will be closely watching the work of the 12-member joint committee that has been created to produce more than $1 trillion in additional savings over the next decade.

"The work of this committee will affect all Americans, and its deliberations should be open to the press, to the public and webcast," she said.

Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid said the downgrade underscored the need for a "balanced approach to deficit reduction that combines spending cuts with revenue-raising measures" such as doing away with tax breaks for the wealthy and oil companies. Here is full story

AP reporters Tom Raum, David Espo and Julie Pace in Washington and Business Writers Chip Cutter and Pallavi Gogoi in New York contributed to this report.
