Headline shares ended a choppy day marginally lower, as sentiment was hit by a threat to the UK AAA credit rating by Moody's and improved after slightly better-than-expected inflation data.
At the close of business, the FTSE100 was down just 5.83 points at 5,899.87 with the FTSE250 off 29.91 points at 11,245.69 and the FTSE Smallcaps 3.3 points lower at 3,065.13.
