As far back as July, the S&P 500 had bounced Spalding-like off the 1120 level. Not only did that level not hold this afternoon, but in the final moments of trading the S&P sliced through 1101, another level deemed critical by stock-market technician types. Aad not only was the breaking of 1101 bad news, but stocks have been posting a series of lower intraday highs over the past month — 1230 on Aug. 31,  then 1220 on Sept. 20 and on Sept. 27.With the break below 1101, there is a trap door that opens down to 1070-1080 and the real support is last summer’s low of 1010-1040. That area is major support that long term bulls should come in and try and defend.

The CME hikes margin requirements for copper and platinum futures contracts, effective Tuesday. Initial requirements for copper contracts are bumped up to $7,763 per contract from $6,750, and maintenance margins go to $5,750  from $5,000. For platinum futures, initial requirements are being hiked to $4,950 per contract from $3,850, and maintenance margins up to $4,500 each from $3,500.
