Banks advanced amid speculation that the European Central Bank may restart covered-bond purchases next week and cut interest rates next month. Deutsche Bank AG (DB) jumped 5.3 percent to $32.99. Morgan Stanley (MS ) climbed 2.2 percent to $14.02. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS ) rose 1.8 percent to $96.89. Bank of America Corp. (BAC) incrsed 1.4 percent to $6.10. JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) advanced 2.3 percent to $30.26. First Horizon National Corp. (FHN) rose 4.3 percent to $6.34.
UBS AG (UBS) advanced 1.5 percent to $11.42. The largest Swiss bank’s Chief Executive Officer Oswald Gruebel quit this weekend, and interim CEO Sergio Ermotti said one of his first priorities was to complete a review of “operational risk infrastructure.”
Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) rose 1.1 percent to $6.24 and climbed 3.7 percent earlier, the most intraday since Sept. 14. The second-largest maker of processors for personal computers was raised to “buy” from “neutral” at UBS AG, which cited expectations for improved execution to drive margins.
