Google Inc. (GOOG)’s announcement that it will purchase Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. (MMI) for about $12.5 billion. Motorola Mobility, the handset maker spun off from parent Motorola Inc., surged 56 percent to $38.18 for the biggest gain in the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index.
Acura Pharmaceuticals Inc. (ACUR) jumped 21 percent to $3.12 after rallying as much as 26 percent, the most intraday since June 20. Seeking Alpha contributor Brian Nichols said the pharmaceutical company may gain as partner Pfizer Inc. distributes their commonly developed painkiller Oxecta.
Bank of America Corp. (BAC) rose 7.2 percent, the most in the Dow Jones Industrial Average, to $7.71. The Charlotte, North Carolina-based bank agreed to sell an approximately $8.6 billion Canadian card unit to Toronto-Dominion Bank and exit U.K. and Irish card markets as the firm limits international consumer lending.
