Stocks to Watch –Solar stocks, June 25, 2012

Crude oil prices have been surging recently, and there is little sign that the momentum will be slowing down. Every time crude oil reaches these types of elevated levels, it seems that interest in alternative forms of energy also rise. Solar is one type of alternative energy that gets particular attention, and should be on investors' radar going into 2012.  

Some solar names are rallying after Citi's Timothy Arcuri provides another bullish note. Arcuri, who in early May suggested Euro solar demand was improving (a delayed plant closing from First Solar seems to back this up) writes today that renewable energy demand may be bottoming, even as oversupply remains a problem. Stock Alert - Pacific Crest Cuts Targets on Networking Stocks as Trough Valuation Approaches (JNPR) (RVBD) (FFIV) (ARUN) - 6/22/12

Pac Crest's Brent Bracelin cuts his targets for several networking stocks (JNPR, RVBD, FFIV, APKT, ARUN, and UBNT) on worries about forex issues and legnthening sales cycles (Cisco has already discussed the latter). Bracelin sees IT hardware stocks in general nearing trough valuations as news flow stays negative for the next month, through the start of earnings season. However, he's expecting a rebound in late summer or fall.

Riverbed (Nasdaq: RVBD) from $34 to $27;
F5 Networks (Nasdaq: FFIV) from $153 to $145;

Stock Alert - Arena Pharmaceuticals (ARNA -16.4%) remains intense, as shares give back a healthy chunk of their recent gains.- 6/22/12

Frenzied activity continues for Arena Pharmaceuticals (ARNA), now down 8% after dropping more than 18% in a matter of minutes, a follow-on to its 11% gain on heavy volume yesterday. As the run-up to an FDA decision on its lorcaserin diet drug continues, the company had risen 39% this week before today's open.

The selling pressure seen by Arena Pharmaceuticals (ARNA -16.4%) remains intense, as shares give back a healthy chunk of their recent gains. Possibly hurting Arena's cause is an article from SA's Shane Blackmon, who notes Arena's rally has been fueled by short-covering (22% of the float was shorted as of May 31), and argues "a bear raid seems inevitable" ahead of the FDA's expected June 27 decision on the company's Locaserin weight-loss drug.
