Best Solar Stocks 2015

Crude oil prices have been surging recently, and there is little sign that the momentum will be slowing down. Every time crude oil reaches these types of elevated levels, it seems that interest in alternative forms of energy also rise. Solar is one type of alternative energy that gets particular attention, and should be on investors' radar going into 2015.

SunPower JV building Chinese solar plants with Apple

SunPower's (SPWR +1.9%) Sichuan Shengtian New Energy Chinese solar project JV is partnering with Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) to build two solar plants with a combined 40MW of capacity in Sichuan Province.
The projects are under construction, and are expected to be finished in Q4. SunPower notes it has already partnered with Apple on 6 California, Nevada, and North Carolina projects with a combined 90MW of capacity. In February, First Solar announced a deal to build an $850M solar farm for Apple and PG&E.
SunPower's Q1 report is due on April 24.

Best Solar stocks 2015

SolarCity +2.4%; BofA reiterates $95 target, sees many catalysts

Believing "numerous catalysts" exist for the next 6-9 months, BofA/Merrill (Buy) is holding onto its $95 SolarCity (NASDAQ:SCTY) target (71% above current levels).
Among the potential catalysts: 1) Clarity on California's solar retail rates and net metering policies. 2) Improved booking/installation mix leading to better retained value. 3) The arrival of 2016 installation guidance (possibly in Q4). 4) The "emergence of a cash flow oriented view of [SolarCity's] operating systems."
The firm values SolarCity's existing operating business at $40/share. It assigns a $55/share valuation to its solar development ops, which was forecast to deliver 15.4GW of installations from 2018-2024. BofA sees SolarCity ending 2016 with 3.1GW of cumulative leased installations that will respectively produce $355M and $200M in unlevered and levered cash flow.
Also: Though admitting Arizona's policies are a setback - SolarCity has sued a local utility for placing ~$50/month in surcharges on new solar installations - BofA notes "constructive regulatory frameworks" have emerged elsewhere. SA author Simple Investment Ideas argued yesterday Arizona-like utility charges won't hold up long-term.
Smaller rival Vivint (VSLR +3.2%) has joined SolarCity in rallying.

Top Solar stocks 2015

Yingli -9.5% on Q4 miss; ASP decline, forex weighs on results

Yingli (NYSE:YGE) is guiding for 2015 solar module shipments of 3.6GW-3.9GW, up a moderate 7.1%-16% Y/Y. 400MW-600MW are expected to go towards Yingli's downstream projects.
In spite of the Q4 miss, the company managed to ship 939.2MW of solar modules (73.7MW for Yingli's downstream projects) in Q4, up from Q3's 903.4MW an topping guidance of 880MW-930MW. Japan (up nearly 3x Y/Y in 2014) and "new emerging markets" (up 90%) were strong points. China accounted for 37% of 2014 shipments.
Gross margin was 16.8%, down from Q3's 20.9% and up from Q4 2013's 12.2%, and near the high end of a 15%-17% guidance range. ASP declines (also seen by peers) and the euro/yen's weakness affected margins, while cost improvements provided a boost. ASP and forex pressures, of course, also pressured Q4 revenue.
Operating expenses fell to 22.6% of revenue from 28.2% a year ago. A $19M forex loss was taken, as was a $14.6M bad debt provision. The downstream project pipeline stands at 1.6GW.
Yingli ended 2014 with $172.3M in cash, $214.7M in restricted cash, $1.57B in short-term borrowings, $276.1M in medium-term notes, and $460.7M in long-term debt. The company is "exploring various financing options, including utilizing credit facilities from local banks and other financial institutions, the renewal and rollover of short-term borrowings and other financing alternatives to support its medium-term notes payment obligations in 2015."

(Bloomberg) -- Apple Inc. is investing $848 million in a solar farm to harvest electricity in a partnership with First Solar Inc.

JinkoSolar drops after factory catches fire

JinkoSolar (NYSE:JKS) is down 3.8% premarket after a major fire broke out at its wafer production facility in Shangrao city, China.

The company estimates between RMB0.5M-RMB1M in damages, but does not expect the incident to have any material impact on its operations, financials or deliveries.

Hot Solar stocks 2015

(Bloomberg) -- Apple Inc. is investing $848 million in a solar farm to harvest electricity in a partnership with First Solar Inc.

Apple will receive power from 130 megawatts of First Solar’s California Flats Solar Project in Monterey County, California, under a 25-year power-purchase agreement, the companies said in a statement on Tuesday. First Solar shares rose 2.1 percent in extended trading, adding to a 4.8 percent gain to $48.54 at the close in New York.

The iPhone maker already powers all of its data centers with renewable energy. Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive officer, has advocated taking more steps to combat climate change. He unveiled the initiative during a presentation at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference in San Francisco. The agreement is the largest in the solar industry for a single commercial customer, he said.

Construction on the 2,900-acre (12-square kilometer) California Flats Solar Project will begin in the middle of the this year and be completed by the end of 2016, the companies said. Additional output of about 150 megawatts from the solar farm will be sold to Pacific Gas & Electric Co.

Canadian Solar to acquire Sharp's Recurrent for $265M

Canadian Solar (NASDAQ:CSIQ) +8.3% premarket after agreeing to acquire Sharp's (OTCPK:SHCAY, OTCPK:SHCAF) Recurrent Energy solar operation for $265M.
Recurrent, founded in 2006, has developed and sold more than 520 MW of solar projects and has a project pipeline of 3.3 GW and 1.1 GW in signed contracts, with developments across North America including California and Texas.
CSIQ says the purchase will increase its total solar project pipeline by ~4 GW to 8.5 GW and its late-stage project pipeline by 1 GW to 2.4 GW.

Solar stocks bounce as market rallies, Deutsche pounds table

Deutsche's Vishal Shah, bullish on solar for a long time, asserts the "recent volatility in solar stocks, driven largely by oil price weakness, presents an attractive entry point for investors as we expect 2015 to be a year of stable industry pricing and accelerating volume growth."
Shah expects solar to see a "balanced supply/demand outlook as strong demand from the US and improving demand from China/other emerging solar markets offsets any potential demand weakness in the UK/Japan."
He observes oil accounts for just ~5% of global electricity output, and sees both solar project pipelines/margins and module margins rising in 2015. Tariffs against Chinese module vendors are expected to be "completely removed."
His top picks are SolarCity (SCTY +3.3%), SunEdison (SUNE +4.1%), SunPower (SPWR +6.1%), and Vivint (VSLR +0.3%); the first three are faring quite well today. Yingli (YGE +0.2%), however, has been downgraded to Hold due to balance sheet and financial flexibility concerns.
Other major gainers: FSLR +3.9%. JKS +6%. ENPH +5.4%. CSIQ +3.7%. RGSE +5.2%. TERP +3.2%.
SunEdison announced today it has bought new wind turbines that will allow it to build up to 1.6GW of wind projects that qualify for U.S. tax credits. The purchase follows the company's $2.4B deal to buy project developer First Wind.

First Solar up 2.8% on Goldman upgrade

Goldman has upgraded First Solar (NASDAQ:FSLR) to Neutral, and upped its target to $44 from $40.86.
The upgrade comes after First Solar made fresh 52-week lows yesterday, taking part in a broader solar stock rout that accompanied further declines in crude oil prices. Shares go for 9x 2015E EPS.

SolarCity, JPMorgan team up on solar financing program

SolarCity (NASDAQ:SCTY) is partnering with JPMorgan (NYSE:JPM) to finance more than $350M in solar power projects with a new investment fund.

The fund is the second created by the two companies, and a follow-up to a fund created in 2013 to finance approximately $170M projects.

U.S. to impose tariffs on solar equipment from China, Taiwan

The Commerce Department is hiking import duties on solar energy equipment from China and Taiwan, closing a loophole that had allowed Chinese manufacturers to avoid tariffs and sell at illegally low prices in the U.S.
Steep anti-dumping duties will now placed on imports of most solar panels made in China and solar cells from Taiwan, likely raising the cost of solar energy at a time of falling oil prices.

JinkoSolar sinks despite strong Q3 profit

Net income of RMB280.6M ($45.7M) vs. RMB103.5M in the second quarter of 2013.
Diluted earnings per ADS of RMB8 ($1.32) vs. RMB4.40 in the same quarter a year ago.
Total solar product shipments amounted to 708.2 MW consisting of 658.1 MW of solar modules, 30.3 MW of silicon wafers and 19.8 MW of solar cells. This represents an increase of 36.5% from 518.9 MW in the same period last year.
Gross margin of 20.6%, compared with 22.6% Q/Q and 22.3% Y/Y.
Cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash of RMB2.1B ($340.7M) as of September 30, 2014 vs. RMB1.6B the previous quarter.
The company expects that total solar module shipments to be in the range of 1,030 MW to 1,120 MW for Q4 and still estimates total solar module shipments to be in the range of 2.9 GW and 3.2 GW for FY 2014.

SunPower -2.9% after providing light 2015 guidance

Ahead of its analyst day talks, SunPower (NASDAQ:SPWR) is guiding for 2015 revenue of $2.4B-$2.6B and EPS of $1.10-$1.50, below a consensus of $2.8B and $1.69.
At the same time, the company now expects Q4 revenue of $1.12B-$1.17B and EPS of $1.00-$1.25 (well above a consensus of $605M and $0.23) due to "the benefit of approximately $450 million in revenue and $0.80 - $0.90 in earnings per share related to the real estate accounting treatment of its 579-MW Solar Star projects."
SunPower expects to recognize revenue on 1.3GW-1.4GW in solar sales next year - its 2014 guidance is at 1.26GW-1.3GW - and to triple its upstream (cell/module production) solar capacity over the next five years. The 2015 capex budget is at $300M-$350M.
The company's YieldCo plans remain "under review."

Canadian Solar +8% after beating expectations as shipments, prices rise

Canadian Solar (NASDAQ:CSIQ) +8.1% premarket after posting better than expected Q2 earnings and revenues, led by strong module demand out of Japan, Germany, the U.K. and the U.S., as well as progress in the build-out of utility-scale solar projects in Canada
Q2 solar module shipments totaled 646 MW vs. company guidance of 600-630 MW, 500 MW in Q1 and 455 MW in the year-ago quarter; Q2 solar module shipments included 70 MW used in the company's total solutions business vs. 49 MW in Q1 and 35 MW a year ago.
Q2 gross margin widened to 19% from 12.8% in the prior-year period.
Issues in-line guidance for Q3, seeing revenues of $760M-$810M vs. $784M analyst consensus, with module shipments of 720-750 MW; expects gross margin of 19%-21%.
Says it is in a position to launch a yieldco, and will discuss the potential for an early 2015 launch.

Canadian Solar +6.4% on Q1 guidance hike

Canadian Solar (CSIQ) now expects Q1 revenue of $460M-$470M, above prior guidance of $415M-$430M and a $422.8M consensus.
Module shipments are now expected to total 490MW-500MW, above prior guidance of 470MW-490MW. Gross margin is expected to be in the lower half of a prior range of 14%-16%.
Q1 results arrive on May 16. Canadian's guidance hike comes in spite of warnings from Yingli and Trina - two other module providers with heavy Chinese exposure. JinkoSolar affirmed its Q1 guidance yesterday.

Hot Solar stocks 2014

More on First Solar: Module efficiency, production, GE, TetraSun

First Solar (FSLR +10.6%) aims to increase its lead-line module manufacturing efficiency from 13.9% in Q4 to 15.6%-15.8% by the end of 2015, 17.7%-18.4% in 2016, and 18.1%-18.9% in 2017.
Installed manufacturing capacity is expected to grow from less than 2GW in 2014 to 3.5GW in 2018, with deployable capacity rising above 4GW.
The company says it has produced a thin-film module with a record 17% efficiency (up from a prior 16.1%). First Solar has already developed a thin-film cell with a 20.4% efficiency.
First Solar is extending its partnership with GE to include developing a new utility-scale plant design the companies assert "significantly increases the size of the solar array served by each inverter and reduces the number of inverter/transformer stations required for each plant" to convert DC power into grid-ready AC power.
First Solar's TetraSun unit (high-efficiency silicon solar cells) is set to begin production in late 2014.

SolarCity affirms guidance, details spending activity

Thanks to sizable increases in both sales/marketing and G&A spend, SolarCity's (SCTY) opex rose 73% Y/Y in Q4 to $65.2M. $234.9M was spent on investing activities, +64% Y/Y, and operating cash flow fell to $13.9M from $57M.
$262.4M was raised via financing activities, and $402.7M via equity/convertible note offerings.
The company expects Q1 GAAP operating lease/solar incentive revenue of $27M-$29M, and solar system sale revenue of $23M-$27M; the Q1 revenue consensus is at $45.2M. EPS is expected to be in a range of -$0.70 to -$0.80, below a -$0.50 consensus.
SolarCity ended 2013 with $577M in cash/equivalents, $1.68B worth of leased/to be leased solar systems (+71% Y/Y), $246M in long-term debt, $53M worth of solar asset-backed notes, and $230M worth of convertible senior notes.
Inventories stood at $111.4M, and the deferred revenue balance at $470.1M (up from $379.8M at the end of Q3).

Which one should you heed?

Volatility, volatility, volatility. It's all the financial world can talk about lately... and, well, for good reason. In the past few months, the world's stock markets have endured some of the most gut-wrenching price swings since the 2007-2009 financial crisis.

But for many investors, it's still not clear what this volatility means for the status of the bull market in U.S. stocks.

The reason why said status remains unclear is in large part because the mainstream pundits haven't exactly been consistent with their punditing. (Note: NOT a real word!)

Take, for example, this summer. Before U.S. stocks fell off the cliff this August, the market was about as volatile as a yoga retreat. The trend was a slow, calm, and steady ascension to a higher self. In fact, the ultimate "fear gauge" known as the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) had dipped below 12 for the first time since 2014.

Now, according to the usual experts, this extended period of market calm was a bullish sign, as these news items from the time explain:

"Market Volatility Hits 2015 Low... U.S. stock investors haven't had much need for those crash helmets... It's looking like the market could be in for many more months of muted swings." (May 22 CNBC)

"Investors wo paid up for options in anticipation of volatility have lost money in the last three years, so as a result, no one is anxious to do it anymore." (May 13 Wall Street Journal)

"One of the more bullish indicators has been volatility, and it remains that way. Stocks can continue to advance as long as volatility isn't trending upward." (June 23 MarketWatch)

Got it? Low volatility is a bull's best ally.

But wait! Come August, the yoga-retreat-like market went from "Om" to "Oh My!!" via triple-digit daily leaps and losses (oh yeah, and one quadruple-digit intraday drop on August 24).

So, guess what the experts had to say about this new climate of precipitous price swings? Answer: That it's also bullish. See:

"Volatility Is Actually Good For the Stock Market's Returns" (MainStreet August 26)

"Yes, the Markets are Volatile -- That's A Good Thing... Stocks have been too nonvolatile for too long. You don't get up-a-lot markets, big moves fast, without abundant gyrations. You should expect this bull market to raise its tenacious head soon, bucking off all the fear skeptics can hurt at it."

So to summarize: Volatility down means "up" for stocks. And -- "up" is also "up"?

How about a different take altogether?

See, the mainstream experts did a first-rate job of determining that low volatility is bullish -- AFTER years of record calm. And, that high volatility is bullish -- AFTER months of record turbulence.

Elliott wave analysis, on the other hand, anticipated a historic reversal from low to high volatility BEFORE the tide turned. Here, the July 2015 Elliott Wave Financial Forecast warned "Here Comes High Volatility"

One gauge of volatility is the CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), a measure of the premium on one-to-three-month S&P options. In essence, the VIX is a sentiment measure, reflecting investors' current state of emotion, from relative calm to outright panic...

This chart confirms the deep complacency. It shows the open interest in puts relative to calls on the VIX, which indicates the ratio of investors' open option contracts betting on a VIX move. On June 19, the ratio dropped to 0.248, its second lowest level since February 16, 2007 (0.165), when the financials peaked, as just noted.

Monday's sell-off appears to be just the start. When the stock market's decline kicks into high gear, volatility will spike to record levels as will the p/c ratio. The era of low volatility will be replaced by head-spinning stock market moves that will shake global stock markets to their foundation.

Retracements -- Corrective Waves

The chart on the left shows a wave 1 followed by corrective wave 2. It is common for second waves to retrace .618 of wave 1 -- thereby making a deep retracement. Another common retracement for wave 2 is .786. You might even see .5, 50%, but .618 is more common. The chart on the right shows the most common retracement for a wave 4. Fourth waves will commonly retrace a smaller percentage or .382 of wave 3. We might also see something like .236.

Examples

Below you can see an impulsive 5-wave move on the chart of the S&P 500. Wave 2 is an expanded flat. Wave 4 is a zigzag. Let's look at the retracements that waves 2 and 4 make.

Wave 2 made a deep retracement -- close to .618. On the Fibonacci table you can see the .382, .5, .618, and .786 retracements. The .618 retracement comes in at 1087.75 and the S&P low is 1090.19.

Wave 4 made a shallow retracement of wave 3. It went just beyond the .382 retracement at 1169.1, bottoming at 1163.75.

In a nutshell, this is what we mean when we say that Elliott waves often correct in terms of Fibonacci ratios.
