What Could Close the Stock Markets Unexpectedly?

Since 1953, the exchanges have attempted to reduce the number of official closing days, knowing that investors want the markets open as long as possible.There is growing pressure, with the Internet and computerized trading, for markets to be open 24/7. But breaks in trading on weekends help moderate volatility, and many trading professionals need this downtime. Additionally, no one wants to hear that the stock market has crashed on a Sunday morning.

 
Since 1885, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) has unexpectedly closed for a number of reasons:

Computer failures: Circuit breakers (the NYSE is required to stop trading when the market declines by a certain percentage)

Power failures, especially in the 1970s

Hurricanes

War (the exchange was closed for 5 months in 1914 at the beginning of World War I, but was never closed for World War II).

Terrorist attacks (September 11-14, 2001)

Items of Note on the NYSE Holiday Schedule:
 

Although the third Monday in February has become popularly known as President’s Day, the NYSE still follows the original designation of Washington’s Birthday as an Exchange holiday.Washington’s Birthday was first declared a federal holiday by an 1879 act of Congress and then modified by The Monday Holiday Law, enacted in 1968. That law shifted the date of the commemoration of Washington’s Birthday from February 22 to the third Monday in February, that is used to this day.

First, whenever a president dies, the exchanges select a day of mourning. For example: January 2nd was chosen as the day to mourn the passing of President Gerald Ford.

Second, the stock exchanges, particularly the NYSE on Wall Street and the London Stock Exchange in England; close on the Christian holidays of Good Friday and Christmas.

Third, Wall Street is very traditional. They have refused to change Washington’s Birthday observance to President’s Day. Until 1953, they observed Lincoln’s birthday (February 12), Columbus Day (October 12), Veterans Day (November 11), and often Election Day (the first Tuesday of November).

Although the NYSE closed on the funeral day of Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968 – the first time they did so in honor of a private citizen – the Exchange resisted adding Martin Luther King Day until 1998, years after it was declared a national holiday. (The Exchange did close to honor the death of J. P. Morgan in 1913, but only for two hours.)

There are a few special rules that apply to stock market holidays:
 

Although the day after Thanksgiving (Friday) is not an official holiday, the market has a tradition of closing at 1:00 p.m. ET.

 

When any stock market holiday falls on a Saturday, the market will be closed on the previous day (Friday) unless the Friday is the end of a monthly or yearly accounting period.

When any stock market holiday falls on a Sunday, the market will be closed the next day (Monday).

Some market holidays are observed on different dates each year:
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is always observed on the third Monday in January.

President's Day is always observed on the third Monday in February.

Memorial Day is always observed on the last Monday in May

The New York Stock Exchange is open from Monday through Friday 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET

The NASDAQ Stock Market regular trading hours are from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET.

After Hours trading is from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. ET.

The NYSE AMEX Equities Stock Market is open from Monday through Friday 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET.

Power-One (PWER)- a maker of power subsystems for IT gear and solar panels, rose 4.8% after reporting Q2 revenue and EPS of $260.3M (+21% Y/Y) and $0.21, compared with a consensus of $253.9M and $0.22. While Q3 revenue guidance is below consensus, full-year guidance is in-line, pleasing a market worried about solar industry weakness.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (GS)-Shares of Goldman Sachs Group (GS) are over $130 and GS may found support in $120s.Goldman Sachs does not have any major resistance $140-$145. Goldman Sachs is now a strong buy below $130.

Apple Inc. (AAPL)-Share of Apple Inc. (AAPL) is closed near $390 on Friday.Apple will now have resistance up at $400.Short term support level at $384 which is recent low.I think stock is near $350 area again.

Research In Motion Ltd. (RIMM)-Research in Motion (RIMM) is trading near $25. Research in Motion will have resistance on the upside level at $30.  I think stock will say this area or can go low $23-$24 next support.RIMM is a strong buy low $20 now.

Oracle Corp. (ORCL)-Share of Oracle Corp (ORCL) is continue trading over $32.Oracle stock has support level at $30. Oracle does not have any major resistance until over $33. 

Cisco Systems, Inc. (CSCO)- Cisco Systems is nice rebound from low $15 last few days.Resistance area is $16.50 and followed by $17.92 and support area is $14.72. Cisco Systems is a strong buy here for the long term.Cisco Systems is a strong buy below $15 share for long term buy list  for 2011 because of this stock will be come just need patience.But stock will stay this range long term.I am looking for next 12 months $24-$25 price target.

Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN)-Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) is trading over $220 strong earning news.AMZN will have resistance at $330.Stock is buy under $180.

Ford Motor Co. (F)-Share of Ford Motor closed near $13.Ford (F) will have resistance  at $15. Ford will  next  resistance level $15.50. Ford continues is a strong buy below low $12.This is my one top pick for 2011.

SIRIUS XM Radio Inc. (SIRI)-Share of Sirius XM Radio is closed under $2.20.Sirius XM Radio will now have support at $1.70 and resistance area is $2.30 & $2.50.Sirius XM Radio is a strong buy on pullbacks below $1.80.

Level 3 Communications Inc. (LVLT)-Level 3 Communications Inc. (LVLT) is holding over $2.30 on Tuesday.Resistance area is $2.62 & support area is $2.19 which is 50 day moving average.

Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan, Inc. (POT) - Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan, Inc. (POT) is trading back over $60. Potash Corp will now have resistance level at $63. Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan, Inc. (POT) is a strong buy below $50.

Sina Corp. (SINA) - Sina Corp. (SINA) was down with market.SINA will have support at the $100 level. SINA will have resistance located at $125.

Rediff.com India Ltd. (REDF)--Rediff.com India Ltd. (REDF) is continue holding under $10.Stock has  resistance area is $11.50.Long term support level is $7.50. This is my one of the top 2011 Stock Gainers.

Netflix, Inc. (NFLX)-Netflix, Inc. (NFLX) is tested $270 on Thursday.Stock could go $250 level which is next support.Netflix Inc (NFLX) will have resistance level at $275.Netflix Inc is a buy on pullbacks below $220 any market correction. 

Baidu, Inc. (BIDU)-Share of Baidu, Inc. (BIDU) is trading under $160 ah because company solid report on Tuesday.But stock is sell off after that.Baidu Inc will have major resistance up $170-$175.Baidu has support level at $125. If Baidu Inc. (BIDU) ever falls below $105, I would start buying back
