El Paso (EP) has agreed to sell its expoloration & production business to a consortium led by Apollo Global (APO) for $7.15B. the consortium is expected to provide $3B in capital to support the deal, and will also draw upon $5.5B in financing arranged by 7 banks. The deal will help finance Kinder Morgan's (KMI) acquisition of El Paso. EP +0.5% AH. KMI +0.8%
Sprint's (S) was just "hours away" from agreeing to an $8B acquisition of discount carrier MetroPCS (PCS - current market cap of $4.35B) before its board vetoed the deal, claims CNBC's David Faber. No details are given, though it's quite conceivable that MetroPCS' spectrum and 4G LTE network could interest Sprint. PCS +5.3% AH. LEAP +5%. S -0.4%.
North American chip equipment makers posted a book-to-bill ratio of 0.95 in January, according to a preliminary estimate from SEMI. Though indicating orders still trailed sales, the figure is a marked improvement from December's 0.85, and evidence of the positive impact rebounding foundry demand is having on the likes of AMAT, KLAC, NVLS, and LRCX.
