Crude oil prices have been surging recently, and there is little sign that the momentum will be slowing down. Every time crude oil reaches these types of elevated levels, it seems that interest in alternative forms of energy also rise. Solar is one type of alternative energy that gets particular attention, and should be on investors' radar going into 2012.
First Solar (FSLR +4.7%) rallies after announcing NRG Energy's (NRG) Agua Caliente solar plant, in which Berkshire Hathaway's MidAmerican Energy has taken a 49% stake, is now more than 2/3 complete, and has over 200MW of installed capacity. Agua Caliente, which has received a DOE loan guarantee and is being constructed and operated by First Solar, is expected to be completed in 2014.
