Australian shares fell in early trading Thursday, with broad-based losses following a flat finish for the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA +0.03% . The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 1653884 AU:XJO -1.16% eased 0.9% to 4,103.40.
Retailers posted sharp losses, with Harvey Norman Ltd. dropping 4.5%, Myer Holdings Ltd. down 2.8% and JB Hi-Fi Ltd. off by 2.2%. Energy firm were other notable decliners, with Santos Ltd. losing 1.6% and Linc Energy Ltd. LNCGY -3.38% falling 2.4%.
