Goodrich Corp. (GR) rose 7.7 percent to $100. United Technologies Corp. (UTX) is in talks to buy the aerospace equipment maker as it looks to expand through a major acquisition, according to three people with knowledge of the matter.
United Technologies lost 1.4 percent to $74.41.
Netflix Inc. (NFLX) rose 1.7 percent to $157.87. The mail-order and online film-rental service plans to separate its DVD-by-mail service from movie streaming, a move the company said will give both businesses a better chance to grow. The DVD- only service will be called Qwikster while the streaming service will keep the Netflix name.
Tyco International Ltd. (TYC) rallied 5.4 percent to $46.04. Tyco plans to break itself into three publicly traded companies, ending a decade when Chief Executive Officer Ed Breen transformed the scandal-plagued company into an S&P 500 index outperformer.
